Bradfield Cricket Club Saturday 2nd v Crown Wood 3 on Sat 13 Jun 2009 at 13:30
Bradfield Cricket Club Won by 98 runs

Match report Is summer really here? Will it last? How hot will it be? How long will it last. Will Bradfield CC retain the ashes? When will the inevitable hosepipe ban start? Is the sky blue? Is water wet?

Just a few questions being asked at this moment in time.

SATURDAY !!

The sun was high in the sky, which was a clear azure blue. Occasional fluffy white cumulus clouds, with high wispy cirrus top cover, gently wafted their way across the panorama. Kevin the Red Kite was dog fighting with local crows and rooks, but still found the time to announce his presence and carry out several majestic flybys over the immaculate Bradfield CC ground.

The youthful opposition had arrived, bringing one of Charlottes Berkshire U17 ladies team-mate and only 2 players over 20, a leisurely walk to the square saw a golden coin spin through the air for what seemed like an age, the call was “tails” and “tails” it was. The opposition invited us to bat electing to field in the sweltering sun.

Out stepped Ed (62) and Ben (70 NO), to take part in a record partnership for our second team of 149 from 30 overs. Both were playing excellent shots all around the wicket, on the “road” like strip. The square although dry is holding up really well and is a credit to all those who help maintain it (Andy, John, Bob, Neil, Bern to name a few). Other pitches we are playing on are already dusting, producing uneven and sometimes dangerous bounce.

After the fall of the 1st wicket, debutant Asha Smith strode to the wicket. Asha is over from Australia on exchange, playing for Reading Ladies on Sundays. It was soon clear that her batting skills were well tuned, as she provided us with an awesome display of stroke play. 50 in 5 overs and a superb 82 not out, the dastardly skipper cut her off in her prime, sportingly declaring at 250 for 1 to gain 4 extra overs. The partnership was 101 from just 11 overs. Ben played the supporting role in his second 100 partnership of the match(carrying his bat), making several 2s with his unselfish running. Ed is a run machine this year but still low scored with 62. How many times is that going to happen??

Tea – Up to the normal excellent standard, was provided by David Keighley, who selflessly turned down the chance of a game to let Jamie Stansfield play. Dave then umpired the whole game in the sun and heat.

The second innings was started with the old ball Richard Lafford, on his season debut, taking the first 3 wickets. At the other end the supportive and reliable David Brown was soon replaced by Asha, who shows some promise with her leg-spin and needs to get overs under her belt.

It was time to take the new ball and to bring on Bradfield CCs secret weapon Charlotte Dickinson! By this time the crowd had been augmented by the returned victorious 1st X1, who were providing boisterous encouragement from the pavilion/scoreboard side of the ground.

After the first few deliveries, the old ball was replaced with the new. A Nervous Charlotte soon got into her stride taking two wickets in her first 5 over spell. She was replaced by Richard Lafford whose next 5 overs gave him final figures of 12-3-48-4 a great start to the season for him.

The crowd were baying (or was it blowing bubbles in their beer) for an over or two from Jamie. The skipper obliged and his 2 overs went for only 9.

It was time for the “coup de gras” enter stage left (or Heat Road end) Charlotte who only took two overs and one ball to finish the game (7.1-1-24-4)

The opposition were all out for a creditable 152 in 37 overs. Our first win of the season.

Special mentions for David Brown (one acrobatic catch) who willingly bowls from any end, at any time when asked (13-2-44-1), Eliot Brown whose catch set us on the way and whose run out ended a promising innings, to help break opposition resistance. Eddie, Richard (one catch) and Jaimie who, with excellent ground work, chasing and throwing, constantly put the opposition under pressure
forcing mistakes.

Behind the stumps, a miserly Ben Pringle, after his mammoth innings in the heat, only conceded 2 byes (8 for the season in 4 games!) and took a catch.

Finally Asha also took a catch to add to her entertaining innings.

Our first win with many more to come if we keep this form.

My thanks to all the team, David Keighley for tea and umpiring, the 1st team for returning so quickly after their win and providing great support for us. The club
Ethos, was great last year, but has increased exponentially this year, the atmosphere is electric, enthusiasm abounds and every one is positive about the future. We have come a long way on the journey but still have some way to go, let’s keep it up and make the community and club proud.

Live the DREAM!!! Or was it dram (for those whiskey drinkers)
